When he stared at me with those dark, taxing eyes, I couldn’t help but shudder. He quietly demanded an answer, and I had no choice but to obey.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”

“What do you mean?”

“What’s happening between us. It’s exciting and new, but at the same time it terrifies me.”

“I terrify you.”

“Not as much as a few weeks ago, but you are intimidating.”

“I’m trying to dial it back because I know it adds to your stress.” He stroked my cheek. “But what could you possibly worry about in this moment?”

“Everything.”

“Can you narrow that down?”

“For starters, you’re my client, and we just had sex.”

“Spectacular sex.” He leaned down and kissed me. “That changes nothing. You’re still my attorney.”

“I don’t want to mess up this opportunity. I don’t regret what we did, but should we have done it?”

“I can assure you it won’t be the last time we do it.” He swiped his lips along mine. “In fact, we’re going to be doing it a lot.”

“There are so many things to consider. What if you don’t want this in a few weeks? Where does that leave me?”

“I could say the same for you.”

“I’m not the one who leaves.” I closed my eyes. “I don’t want to go anywhere but you…” What am I doing? Why am I sabotaging this before it even begins?

“What does that mean? You’re not the one who leaves?”

“Nothing, I’m being absurd.”

“You’re afraid I’m going to abandon you like everyone else in your life.”

“I…”

“Your mother and father. The nannies, Matt, and even Duke.”

Everything he said was true, but hearing him say it made the pain more real. I tried not to think about it, and most of the time I succeeded, but if I were being honest, there was a reason Kiki was the only person in my life whom I trusted.

“I don’t blame Duke for dying,” I whispered. “I have abandonment issues. That’s why I don’t get close to anyone, or why I haven’t in the last few years. It hurts when they leave.”

“I understand.” He took my chin between his fingers, running his thumb along my bottom lip. “I don’t get close to anyone either. It’s not something I’ve ever wanted or needed, which is why I had the house guests.”

“Oh.” He got rid of his harem for me, and now, he told me he didn’t do relationships.

“I’m not leaving.”

I met his stare, desperately wanting to understand him and to believe him. There were so many layers to Angelo, and I’d only scratched the surface.

“What happened between us tonight wasn’t something I expected when I requested you to be my attorney, but I realized we were headed in this direction not long after. There are some things I can’t explain, and you’ll have to accept that if you want to be with me. I promise I will take care of you and protect you with every fiber of my being. I intend to be with you until you’ll no longer have me.”

“Why are you so intense?” I let out the breath I’d been holding since we started this conversation.
